The Nantwich & District Branch of The RBL Launch Poppy Helper Badge Scheme

A few months ago The Crewe News were invited to attend a lovely one off award ceremony in Nantwich for the 4th Nantwich Brownies to recognise their fund raising efforts for the local poppy appeal.
The night was such a brilliant success and we are pleased to be the first to announce that the Nantwich & District branch of the Royal British Legion have launched the scheme as a permanent award in the area.

DSCF1186 - CopyThe idea for the “Poppy Helper” badge was born when a local Brown Owl approached the Branch and asked if her group could be involved with the Poppy Collection.

As the Branch usually has its information gazebo in Nantwich Town Square during the Remembrance period she asked if we had any objection if they made cakes and sold them alongside the gazebo with any money raised being a donation to the appeal, we had no problems with that and on a cold damp Saturday afternoon they duly turned up, set up their table and went at it.

It wasn’t long before they had sold all their cakes and started on a few second hand books, one of the brownies was so good she actually sold the same book three times! To the same person! Albeit a Branch member.

The Branch members who attended on the day were very impressed and when the Branch was approached that this brownie group be allowed to march in the annual Remembrance Parade and Service with their pack flag we had no hesitation and welcomed them.

DSCF1148During the Church Service comments were overheard (by Branch member Glyn Haslam) about how well behaved and attentive they were. Having already decided that the group merited recognition we had to decide what form it should take.

An individual badge was decided upon and a design finalised.
All that was left was to get it financed, Glyn had been so impressed he offered to put his hand in his pocket and personally fund the first run of badges.

Good luck to everyone, we will look forward to featuring the award winners on The Crewe News in the future!
