Numerous customers were left concerned over their holiday bookings after Nantwich Travel appeared to suddenly close this week.
Customers say they have paid thousands of pounds for holidays with Nantwich Travel
Angry customers turned up at the shop in an attempt to confront the owner, David Shearer, but he has not been seen for days.
One party reportedly handed over £18,000 for a group trip that they now may not be able to go on.
Customer Richard Newton, aged 26, said:
“I handed over almost £2,000 on August 15th to book my honeymoon to Turkey on October 3rd.
I visited the shop and spoke to Mr Shearer just a few days ago in the hope to be collecting my tickets but I was told they had not arrived and that Mr Shearer “was not sure why”, telling me, he would let the couple know when they did.
We’re devastated that this could happen. My daughter was really excited.”
Thomas Cook, through which the holiday was allegedly booked, said they had no record of the booking, according to Mr Newton.
Another holidaymaker, who didn’t wish to be named, said:
“This was supposed to be a once in a lifetime holiday for my family, for my children to Orlando Florida.
I have lost £3,200. I spoke to David Shearer yesterday and he promised that he would refund money into my account but that has not happened.”
A spokesman for Abta confirmed that despite the shop facia bearing the Abta logo, the business has not been a member of the organisation since April 30 2013, meaning recent bookings will not be protected under the body’s financial protection scheme.
A Cheshire Police spokesman said:
“Cheshire Police has received several calls from members of the public regarding a travel agency in Nantwich.
Police are currently investigating whether any criminal offences have taken place.”
The Global Travel Group, which Nantwich Travel became a member of this year, said in a statement:
“We are supporting the police with their enquiries.
We are saddened to learn of any possible misconduct,” said a spokesman.
We urge anyone who is concerned about a holiday booking, or any payment they made to Nantwich Travel, to contact the police directly.
We are unable to comment further on an ongoing police investigation.”
Nantwich Travel have been contacted for a comment but without success.
