Detectives in Sandbach are investigating a high-value theft that took place at a building society.
At 6.35pm on Monday 17 February two security officers were delivering cash to the Nationwide Building Society in High Street.
Whilst they were inside the premises two men, armed with a sledgehammer, approached the building society and tried to gain entry via the front door.
Both security officers managed to secure themselves behind a locked door – they were not injured during the incident. One of the offenders entered the building society and stole a cassette full of cash from the ATM machine.
The offenders then fled the scene in a black BMW, which was later found burned out in Church Street.
An investigation has been launched and officers are currently carrying out a number of enquiries in the local area including CCTV enquiries, house-to-house enquiries and any relevant forensic enquiries.
DS Jim Boulton said:
“I am appealing to anyone who has any information, which could assist with our enquiries, to get in touch.
In particular I’m keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious that night – the incident took place around tea time so there may well have been people in the area who were heading home from work and I would urge anyone who may have seen anything significant to contact us.
The offenders were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas”.
Anyone with any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 771 of 17 February or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
