A message from Cllr Sherratt.
I have decided to leave the Labour Party to complete the rest of my term until 2015, as an independent for the Ward Crewe West.
It’s a decision I have not taken lightly, the reasons are for leaving are due to equality issues within the Councillor Realm itself.
I had a baby during the 2nd year of my term in 2013 and after emergency surgery, I then suffered from post natal depression and was breastfeeding. Getting to meetings was understandably patchy during that time and was until I finished breastfeeding.
My baby has only gone into Nursery last month.
I also have a 7 year old boy, which made some evening meetings impossible, particularly as my other half was working longer hours, so there was no evening childcare for my children, so I couldn’t always attend.
I’m not rich, I’m a working class girl who cannot afford a nanny, I juggled many balls just like any other woman my age.
I did the best I could with the limited time I had to spare, but even though the Labour Party is meant to be the party of equality, they have no policies for councillors that take maternity leave.
Thus on my full return to my duties I was greeted by a deselection with no warning at all.
Councillors are all held to the standard of a retired person, meaning there is no equal representation of men and women of working age
So I would like to take this opportunity to reassure and thank members of the Crewe West Ward for their continued support and that it is business as usual.
The Crewe News spoke to Cllr Arthur Moran this afternoon who is deputy leader of the independant group in Cheshire East.
Cllr Moran said:
It is clear that Michelle is very upset by the way she was treated by the Labour party.
As an independant I can say that we are looking forward to welcoming Michelle as a member of the independant group.
