The Crewe Lyceum Theatre was the venue of a brilliant nostalgic show last night (June 9th) thanks to Barry Steele and Friends.
The Crewe News were there to watch the show and were taken on a trip down memory lane.
We were treated to the delights of The Big ‘O’ who was the one and only Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash.
The Barry Steele and friends show appeared at the Crewe Lyceum last night and put on an extravanganza of music right through from the 1950’s to the 1980’s.
We took our seats at the theatre waiting for the show to start and the first thing we noticed was a large screen at the back of the stage, this screen was showing lots of pictures of Roy Orbison throughout his life with facts about him and his music that were very interesting.
It was then time for Barry to take to the stage and straight away we couldn’t believe his likeness to Roy Orbison.
He was wearing, black trousers, black boots, a white jacket and Roys trademark shades, along with Roys dark coloured hair and style, Barry really looked the part.
I won’t give too much away about Barrys set list because I dont want to spoil the show but I will say as soon as he started singing he captivated the audience straight away with some of his earlier hits, when he started singing ‘Leah’ there where gasps of delight from the audience.
One lady I noticed was very emotional at this track for reasons only known to her, Barry was obviously doing what he intended to do and that was to take people on a journey of music and memories.
The whole show was a mix of footage and film reels of Roy and certainly learned me a thing or two about the iconic star.
Barry put his heart and soul into his first set but there were many more exciting things to come.
Next up was the brilliant Peter John Jackson as Johnny Cash.
I didnt know a great amount about Johnny Cash but I really enjoyed my first real introduction to his music.
Peter held the audience well and treated us all to a Rock-a-Billy heaven.
Peter certainly knows how to play the harmonica, his performance during ‘Orange Blossom Special’ was a real eye opener and the whole crowd cheered him on as he wowed us with his skills.
His performance of ‘A Boy Named Sue’ brought the house down.
Peter has broadened my knowledge on Johnny Cash and I’d certainly want to see him perform again, it was fast, fun and everybody loved him.
Elvis was in the building too, Paul Molloy focused on some of the Kings earlier hits and looked fabulous during his second set, he rocked us all along to hits such as, ‘GI Blues’ and ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ in a replica Elvis US army uniform and turned a few ladies heads in the audience, you could tell he was really enjoying himself and obviously loves performing.
The backing band were second to none and played the hits of all three acts superbly.
They complimented all the performers beautifully and covered a range of decades with ease.
The keyboard player was outstanding, what he couldn’t do with that keyboard wasn’t worth doing.
I’m sure he did Jerry Lee-Lewis proud!
The show as a whole was amazing from the moment the house lights dimmed.
All performers were exceptional and I would definitely recommend that if the Barry Steele and Friends show visits your area then you must go and check them out.
You don’t have to be a massive fan of of a certain artist or a certain decade to enjoy yourself at this show.
The show is suitable for all ages and is guaranteed to make you leave humming away to some of the greatest music the world is ever to see.
I certainly left knowing a lot more about Roy Orbison than I knew before I went in, the large screen is a really good idea, it was a really nice touch to this already amazing and well produced show.
One member of the audience I spoke to after the show said:
The screen showing the information was the best part of the show for me.
I really enjoyed reading about the facts of Roys career and his life with first wife Claudette.
Barry and the others have been brilliant tonight and i’ve really enjoyed being here, Barrys voice was amazing!
Please check out the Barry Steele & Friends website to find out if they will be appearing at a town near you and prepare to be astounded, it really was like Roy was on the stage, it gave to me a real feeling of what it would have been like to be in the presence of the great man himself.
Barry sounded superb and we cannot wait until he is back in Crewe with Johnny and Elvis!
Barry Steele and DSp.llp are very proud to be the only Roy Orbison show in the UK to be officially authorised by Barbara Orbison and Orbison Enterprises to sell Roy Orbison Merchandise.
It is well known that Barbara Orbison is very protective of her husbands legacy so it is a mark of Barry’s unique vocal quality that has led to a professional working relationship between Orbison enterprises and Barry and Lynne Steele.
As Lynne says
“It was one of the proudest moments of my life to see my signature and Barbara Orbison’s signature on the same page”.
